Submitting Applications

Getting Application Forms

Once you’ve decided which colleges are on your "apply to" list, the next step is to find out which application to submit. You will need to complete an application for each school you are applying to.

Customized Application
Many schools create their own admission applications. Contact the school to request a copy. Carefully follow the instructions on each form.

Common Application (Common App)
If your school is one of the nearly 300 colleges and universities that accept this form, you can get a copy from your guidance office, complete the application online, or download a copy. A time-saving benefit of this application is you complete it once, and you can send the same application to multiple schools.

Two-Part Application
If your school uses a two-part application, submit Part I (which contains basic questions such as name and address) as soon as possible. September is not too early. The school will send you Part II after reviewing Part I. Contact your choice schools to request this application.

Online Applications
Many schools offer their college applications on the Web. Use College Answer's Online Application Search to see if your school's form is online.

Tips for completing applications:

•  Make a copy of the application and use it for your rough draft. This gives you the chance to think your answers through and rework them before completing the final application.

  •  Type your application if possible. If you have access to a computer and printer, you can download applications from most school websites, fill them out on the computer, and print them for signing.

  •  Double-check your answers. Make sure you've answered all the questions and corrected any misspellings. Ask someone else to review your application, too.

  •  Make copies of everything before sending your application package to the school.
